Tools and Resources that Support Climate Change Resilient Food Production

CHAIRS REPORT

Create Hope in the World

Sometimes I think that creating hope is something that is difficult to achieve in this world, when more and more people are hungry, where there are wars, and where children needlessy die daily.

Bur examples of hope must be celebrated.

In October, our Executive Officer, Ms Karalyn Hingston, and our Publications Director, Dr John McPhee were participants in World Vision International’s expert panel for their symposium at the Micronutrient Forum 6th Global Conference, in the Hague.

This was a coup for Food Plant Solutions; we have resources for nearly 60 countries and continue to work tirelessly towards our goal to end hunger, malnutrition and ensure food security for all.  A celebration indeed.

But to fulfill this goal we urgently need more SPONSERSHIP, to assist us to fulfill the requests from around the world, who have an urgent need to feed their communities. Giving people the knowledge to become more self sufficient and empowered to make decisions about food choices that are suitable for the climate they live in, will enable their children to survive and thrive.

This will create food security for the whole community.

Desmond Tuto said “Do a little bit of good where you are. It is those bits of good, put together, that can overwhelm the world”.

I WAS AMAZED AT THE TYPES OF TOOLS AND RESOURCES

World Vision International invited Food Plant Solutions to participate as an expert panellist in their symposium at the Micronutrient Forum 6th Global Conference at The Hague, in October.  The Conference attracted over 2,100 attendees, providing an opportunity for Food Plant Solutions to showcase their work to a wide audience.

World Vision International’s symposium, entitled The Power of Food-Based Approaches to Fight Malnutrition in Stable and Fragile Contexts, enabled Food Plant Solutions to promote their extensive tools and resources.  This was particularly pertinent as more of the international development community are shifting their focus to food-based approaches.

During WVI’s symposium, Diane Baik, MSc, PGDipPH, Senior Technical Advisor – Health and Nutrition World Vision International, said “I remember the first time I met with Karalyn, I was amazed at the types of tools and resources that Food Plant Solutions has available.  I was like this cannot be true, this cannot be real because it’s like a child in a toy store, you know.

There’s all these resources specifically for certain contacts and certain countries and certain regions.

And many times, when you are working in food-based approaches, it’s so difficult to find this information and a lot of times these food composition tables don’t include a lot of these indigenous foods that are available.  And we’re trying to find information on them and what is the nutrient composition, and we can’t find it. And when we found Food Plant Solutions, I was like we really need to share this information with a larger audience.”

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO FEED THE NORTHERN SUBURBS

The Northern Suburbs Community Centre Inc (NSCC) was established in 1983 and offer a range of activities and programs co-designed by their community, to meet their needs.

In 2021, NSCC partnered with Starting Point Neighbourhood House (SPNH) and Utas, to undertake community engagement sessions focused on “What will it take to feed the Northern Suburbs”.  From this a vision was established by the community to “create a place(s) for connecting and belonging, for growing, cooking, eating, selling, buying, and sharing healthy and sustainable food that is easy to access for everyone” – this space would be known as The FaRM, (Food And Resilience Movement).

Almost one year on and the project is thriving!  There are over 30 local volunteers engaged in growing produce, training and upskilling and also sharing their skills. A very successful launch was held, which saw 200 community members engage with the project.

NSCC is very excited about the developing partnership with Food Plant Solutions who shares a similar ethos and commitment to food justice.  On Friday 17th November, there will be a community event to launch Food Plant Solutions recently created publication “Tasmanian Guide to Nutritious Edible Plants”.

The publication lists a number of edible and nutritious plants which flourish in Tasmania.  Some of these are familiar, others such as adzuki bean or cape gooseberry are less so.  It provides a description of the plant and its nutrition, which parts are edible and the growing requirements.  It is an excellent guide for people who are starting out with their garden.

The publication, and the work of NSCC, with their FaRM project, are practical responses to address food security in Tasmania.

The Minister for Agriculture, the Hon Jo Palmer will launch the book at Northern Suburbs at the Community Centre, Newnham, on Friday 17th November at 3.30pm.
